This disease is divided into two, namely type 1 and 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a pancreas that cannot produce insulin at all. While type 2 diabetes is caused by insufficient insulin produced by the pancreas or body cells do not react to insulin. Of the two types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes affects most children. This means children must be given regular insulin injections. In children with type 1 diabetes, patterns and eating times must be highly considered and regulated in order to manage the ups and downs of blood sugar levels in the body.

Food Preparing Guide

It is important to remind children not to skip breakfast, which will increase blood sugar after a night's sleep. In addition, prepare healthy snacks so that blood sugar levels are more easily controlled. Children with type 1 diabetes can eat like other children. They can eat what they want, including candy or chocolate, but of course to a certain extent. Food intake for children with type 1 diabetes focuses on nutritious foods, high in vitamins and minerals, and cutting intake of fat, sugar, or empty carbohydrates. Here are some eating guidelines for children with type 1 diabetes:
  • Reduce unhealthy saturated fatty foods, such as bacon or sepek, full-fat milk, and butter. It is better to consume salmon which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, and fat-free milk or yogurt.
  • Consume enough fiber (25-30 grams per day) to help control blood sugar obtained from grains, nuts, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Eat fresh and natural fruits, for example grapes and berries. Fruit is a natural source of sugar.
  • When eating vegetables, choose fresh ones and don't add salt or sauce. Vegetables that can be consumed include green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, celery, carrots, beets, asparagus
  • Calculate the amount of carbohydrates that enter the stomach. Carbohydrates can turn into sugar in the blood, consequently blood sugar levels will increase after eating. Carbohydrates can be obtained from grains (pasta, bread, cakes), fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and sugar.
  • Do not forget to eat protein sourced from meat, beans, and eggs.
